Your Basic Dating Guide

Your Basic Dating Guide

Dating isn't easy. Especially in 2024 when things are changing so drastically! It seems so transactional and unintentional but here is my guide to navigating dating.

1. Preparation

Self-Reflection:

  • Understand your goals: Are you looking for a serious relationship or something casual?
  • Know your values and deal-breakers. This helps in finding someone compatible.

Self-Care:

  • Confidence: Work on building your self-esteem and body positivity. When you're comfortable with yourself, it goes a long way.
  • Appearance: Dress in a way that makes you feel comfortable and confident. As they say, when you look good, you feel good.

Safety:

  • Be cautious about sharing personal information. Don't give too much too soon and share your location with a close friend or family member.
  • Meet in public places until you feel comfortable.

2. Finding Potential Partners

Online Dating:

  • Choose the right platform for YOU: There are many dating apps and websites, each catering to different types of relationships.
  • Create a genuine profile: Use recent photos and write a bio that reflects your true self.

In-Person:

  • Join clubs, attend events, and participate in activities that interest you.
  • Be open to meeting people through friends or social gatherings.

3. Starting Conversations

Online:

  • Start with a friendly greeting and a compliment.
  • Ask open-ended questions to learn more about the person.

In-Person:

  • Smile and make eye contact.
  • Use common interest or the environment as a conversation starter.

4. Planning the First Date

Choosing the Activity:

  • Pick a public place where you both can feel comfortable and safe.
  • Choose activities that allows for conversation, like coffee, a walk, or a casual meal.

Setting the tone:

  • Keep it light and fun.
  • Avoid controversial topics like politics or religion on the first date.

5. During the Date

Communication:

  • Be an active listener: Show interest in what your date is saying.
  • Be yourself: Authenticity is key to building a genuine connection.

Body Language:

  • Maintain good eye contact.
  • Pay attention to your date's body language to gauge their interest and comfort.

Ending the Date:

  • Be honest: If you enjoyed the date, let them know.
  • Discuss future plans: If you're interested in a second date, suggest it.

6. Post-Date Etiquette

Follow-Up:

  • Send a thank-you message: It shows appreciation and keeps the conversation going.
  • Reflect on the experience: Consider what you liked and what you might want to do differently next time.

Decision Making:

  • If interested: Plan another date.
  • If not interested: Be polite and honest to avoid leading the person on.

7. Building a Relationship

Communication:

  • Be open and honest about your feelings and expectations.
  • Regularly check in with each other about how things are going.

Mutual Respect:

  • Respect each other's boundaries and individual time.
  • Support each other's interests and personal growth.

Enjoy the Journey:

  • Dating is a process of getting to know someone and having fun along the way.
  • Don't rush things; let the relationship develop naturally.

By following these steps, you can approach dating with confidence and a positive mindset. Remember, the goal is to find someone compatible who respects and values you as much as you do them.
